The Elegant Evolution: A Parisian Perspective on Women's Trousers.
This post has been published by Shona White, on behalf of Margot, one of Vivien Lauren's esteemed designers.
As a Paris-trained fashion stylist, I've always been fascinated by the transformative journey of women's trousers - a garment that represents far more than mere fabric, but a powerful narrative of liberation and self-expression.
My name is Margot Delacroix, and I am going to take you down the path of history which led to the trouser for the ladies.
If you imagine Paris, in the early 20th century: women then, were confined not only to restrictive skirts, but also to many societal expectations. We all know 1st came the stiff corset, and the umbrella petticoat, but even after that, the long heavy skirt lingered on. Yes, and on, for quite a while.

Then by and by came the revolutionaries to shatter this glass cage that was binding women's fashion liberties. These were women who dared to challenge these constraints. There had to be a catalyst, of course, to help and for this, it was the silver lining to the dark cloud (that was of the two great wars).
Coco Chanel, whom many of you now know, my fellow Parisian, was among the first to whisper a sartorial rebellion. In the 1920s, she began introducing wide-leg, masculine-inspired trousers, scandalizing Parisian society while simultaneously liberating women's movement.
Coco's designs became those which define Timeless Elegant Style to this day, which formed the haute couture - many of these designs still grace the catwalk today. Worn by women today, as the epitome of class and luxury, as they far surpass designs which came far afterward. Her work can still be seen - captured in fashion catwalk volumes which can be found in literature circles and in fashion shows.

Now, going back to the 20's, well, World War II arrived, bringing with it such new impositions on the woman, which spun it into the unexpected catalyst we talked about earlier. As women stepped into factories and took on traditionally male roles, the long skirt, sweeping the floors just couldn't cut it anymore.
In came Coco, and her trousers - it became not just clothing, but a statement of capability, a statement of strength. To quote a line, 'Rosie the Riveter', if you picture the woman, who has now ditched her long skirts for the masculine look, then, working in the factory. Well, Rosie now wearing trousers on the shop floor, she wasn't just an American icon - she represented a global transformation of feminine identity!
Then of course time went by, the two world wars had come and gone, taking with them the great depression. By the 1960s and 70s, the trousers had become soo much more than a factory woman's work enabler, it had become a symbol of feminist empowerment!
Designers like Yves Saint Laurent - another legendary Parisian - began creating elegant trouser suits for women, blurring the lines between masculine and feminine fashion. The pant suit, or trouser suit, then, wasn't just clothing; it was armor, a declaration of professional and personal autonomy. Yves' works and those who followed in his footsteps lifting up his banner are also captured in fashion volumes.
A seemingly simple piece of clothing, began to represent so much more than fashion, it has since, and will always be the journey of female empowerment and self-expression.
As I reflect on this rich history, I'm reminded that fashion is never just about the fabric - it's about stories, identities, and transformations. Which brings me to my dear colleague Sophie, whose Milan perspective offers a contemporary lens on this ongoing sartorial revolution.
Sophie's Modern Trouser Perspective: Where Italian Craftsmanship Meets Contemporary Style

As a Milan-trained designer, I've watched trousers evolve from a mere clothing item to a powerful statement of personal style. Our Italian design philosophy has always understood that trousers are more than fabric - they're a canvas of personal expression.
In recent times, wide-leg trousers have definitively claimed their place in the fashion pantheon. The key is in the proportions - creating a silhouette that celebrates the female form while offering comfort, versatility, freedom in movement, and elegance.
The Italian approach to trousers, when I say it has always been about more than fabric - I mean, it's about understanding movement, craftsmanship, and the subtle art of making a woman feel both comfortable and extraordinary.
Our design principles emphasize three essential elements:
Impeccable Tailoring
Luxurious Fabric Selection
Emotional Resonance
When a woman puts on the perfect pair of trousers, something magical happens. Her posture changes. Her confidence elevates. She isn't just wearing clothing anymore - she's wearing a story of craftsmanship, a personal statement, and personal empowerment. She is wearing something which allows personal freedom of movement, she can do almost anything in this trouser.
